Buying a Machu Picchu ticket sounds simple, but first you need to decide which circuit to visit, what time to enter, and whether you want to climb one of the mountains on the site. This guide explains your options so you can buy with confidence and spend your time at the citadel, not in line.
The General Entrance: What It Includes
The general entrance gives you access to the citadel along one of the visiting circuits, with an assigned entry time. Circuits change over time and follow different routes: some focus on the panoramic view, others on walking through the citadel and its terraces.
As a reference we use 152 soles for the general entrance for foreign visitors, but prices can change. Confirm them on the official Ministry of Culture website before you pay.
Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain
The mountains around the citadel have limited daily quotas and sell out first. If you want to climb Huayna Picchu, book that ticket together with your entrance, several months ahead in high season.
Entry Times
Entry is organized in time slots. The 6:00 to 8:00 a.m. slots are the most in demand. If you prefer fewer people, slots after 1:00 p.m. usually have fewer visitors, although the light changes.
How to Buy Without Mistakes
Buy only through official channels or authorized agencies. The name on the ticket must match your identity document, because it is checked at entry. Save your confirmation and bring your original document.
To reach Aguas Calientes you can take the train from Cusco or Ollantaytambo, then a bus of about 25 minutes up to the citadel. Book the train well in advance in high season.
Tips for your visit
- Buy your ticket 2 to 3 months ahead if you travel between May and September.
- Check the circuit and entry time on your confirmation before leaving Cusco.
- Bring your original identity document; copies and photos are not accepted.
- Arrive at the entrance early: ticket checks and the queue can take longer than you expect.
- Hire a guide inside the citadel: the historical context completely changes the visit.
With the right ticket, a well-chosen entry time, and your document ready, your Machu Picchu visit becomes stress-free. Check the official conditions before you buy, since circuits and prices can change, and plan with a margin in high season.
