Peru has three regions with very different climates: the desert coast, the Andean highlands, and the Amazon jungle. That is why there is no single answer to when you should travel. This guide helps you choose based on your route and priorities.
The Dry Season: May to October
In the highlands, such as Cusco and the Sacred Valley, this is the most recommended time: sunny days, cold nights, and trails in better condition for trekking. It is also high season, with more tourists and higher prices.
The Rainy Season: November to March
In the highlands it rains mostly in the afternoon, with short showers and very green vegetation. Trails can be muddy, and some routes, such as the Inca Trail, close in February for maintenance.
The Coast: Mild Weather All Year
Lima and the coast have mild temperatures year-round. From June to September a gray mist known as garúa is common, without heavy rain. If you want sun on the coast, the summer months from December to March are the warmest.
The Jungle: Rain Is Not Always Predictable
The Amazon is humid all year. The dry season, especially June to August, is usually the most comfortable for river trips and hikes, although it can always rain.
Our Recommendation
If it is your first time and you want to combine Lima, Cusco, and Machu Picchu, April, May, September, or October offer good weather and fewer people than peak July. If your route includes the Amazon, consider June to August.
Tips for your visit
- If you travel to Cusco in the dry season, bring thermal clothing: nights can be very cold.
- Book domestic flights and trains well in advance for July and August.
- Pack in layers: the weather changes a lot between the coast, the highlands, and the jungle.
- Check festival dates before you travel, such as Inti Raymi in June: there are more tourists and higher prices.
- Bring sunscreen and insect repellent, especially if you are going to the jungle.
There is no bad month to visit Peru; it depends on the region you want to see. The highlands shine in the dry season, the coast is pleasant almost all year, and the jungle has its best window in the dry months. Choose your route first, then your month.
